Q. Where is the documentation and how do I use StarterFile ?

Q. Do you offer any help with writing CDs ?

A. No but we have produced information to illustrate what needs to be done. See burn a CD.

Q. How do I buy StarterFile ?

A. Complete this form, then enter your credit card details and if authorised by your bank then you will be given a link to download the registered version of StarterFile.

Q. I am having a problem with credit card authorisation ?

A. The most likely problems for failing authorisation are incorrectly entered card, or pin, numbers. However, some credit cards cannot be used for online purchases. We do take payment by cheque.

Q. Can we purchase by company purchase order ?

Q. Does it matter whether the CD-ROM is d: drive or e: drive?

A. No. Ensure your files do not specify drive letters just relative paths.

Q. How can I have a link in a HTML file to install software?

A. Just use a normal HTML link

Q. What happens if the user doesn't have an application associated to the file extension that I want to autorun?

A. Nothing and it's as if autorun.inf hadn't been written to CD.

Q. Can I autorun a file which does not have a file extension?

A. No.

Q. Can I autorun a filename which contains spaces?

A. Yes by enclosing the filename in quotes.

Our recommendation would be to rename your file and avoid spaces in filenames!

Q. Does AutoRun work with all versions of Windows?

A. AutoRun works with Windows 95, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. This includes Windows 98, Windows 2000 and XP.

MS-DOS, Windows versions 3.1 and earlier, and Windows NT versions 3.51 and earlier do not support AutoRun. You can use AutoRun-enabled CD-ROMs in such systems but AutoRun features are ignored and CD-ROMs behave as ordinary CD-ROMs.

Q. Do you offer telephone support?

A. No. Autorun problems covers the vast majority of issues that are experienced.

Q. When I click on starterfile.exe I just get this dialog box?

A. This is an about box. StarterFile is not run by clicking on starterfile.exe: see these examples.

Q. Can I AutoRun a file in a subdirectory?

A. To autorun a file in a sub-directory, use a back-slash \ character after each directory name.
Do not use a forward slash /

Here is the autorun.inf file to autorun the file start.htm in a sub-directory files.

Q. Can autorun be turned off ?

A. Yes. See Autorun can be turned off in our problems section.

Q. How can I add an icon as a symbol for CD when it is inserted.?

Q. Can StarterFile be used to open multiple files?

A. Yes. Here's how, you need to have autorun.inf call a batch file:

starterfile.exe file2.htm

starterfile.exe, autorun.inf, open.bat, 1.htm and 2.htm need to be written to the root directory of the CD.

Q. Can StarterFile be used under Linux to autorun files?

A. Yes. we have at least one customer who has confirmed that it is possible to use StarterFile under Linux (SuSE, Knoppix, Debian, and RedHat) using WINE.
